EPA approves California greenhouse gas rules - Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal:

The approval is a reversal of a 2005 decisionh striking downthe state’s Clean Air Act waiveer request. The EPA waiver means the stat can begin implementing a 2004 law that requires automakers to increase the fuel efficiency of cars by40 percent, to 35.5 miles per gallon, over the next sevebn years. “This waiver is consistent with the Clean Air Actas it’sz been used for the last 40 years and supportds the prerogatives of the 13 states and the Districtr of Columbia who have optedd to follow California’s EPA administrator Lisa Jackson said in a news “More importantly, this decisioh reinforces the historic agreement on nationwide emissions standards developedf by a broad coalition of industry, government and environmenta stakeholders earlier this year.
” President Obama in May announced a nationalp policy to improve fuel efficiency in new cars and trucks.
